Music is all about self-expression. And we love a band who isn’t afraid to show off their fun side on stage! With songs like “Because Boobs” and “My Clingy Girlfriend” (all from their latest album Space Vampires vs Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D), Psychostick mixes heavy metal sound with witty lyrics. We snagged a few minutes with lead singer Rob Kersey.

Band Bombshell: You guys are a self-proclaimed “humorcore” band. What does that mean and where did this sound come from?
Rob Kersey: Humorcore is essentially Comedy Metal. We take things that make us giggle like perverted schoolgirls and put RAWR DEATH KILL riffs underneath them.

BB: Which of your songs really gets the crowd going?
RK: I’d have to say “Jagermeister Love Song” and “Welcome to the Show” for starters. Most of ‘em are really high energy so that’s a tough one to answer.

BB: You’ve played some pretty big gigs with bands such as Insane Clown Posse, Slipknot, Disturbed, and Rob Zombie. What show stands out as a favorite?
RK: I’d have to go with “Earthday Birthday” in Orlando, FL. That one was great because all these uber-radio friendly bands were playing “cool” and “hip” tunes, then we went up there and got all sorts of weird looks. They loved it though; great show.

BB: You’ve taken an impressive 21 national tours since 2006! What cities are you always glad to return to?
RK: St Louis, Chicago, Orlando, and Pittsburgh to name a few. Great shows there.

BB: You can tell you guys have so much fun both on and off stage. Any recent funny stories from the tour?
RK: Alex never catches the giant taco we throw at him. Get on it, stupid ALEX!

BB: Between touring and recording, you guys release hilarious music videos. Where do the ideas for these videos come from?
RK: Real life experience and lots of caffeine. Sometimes when I spend too much time in the shower I’ll come up with stuff. It’s pretty random and chaotic!

BB: You guys are definitely a DIY band. You do all your own recording, booking, and marketing. Is it ever too much work or do you like the control?
RK: Sometimes it seems overwhelming because you’re never actually “done.” But all in all it’s worth it because we’re completely responsible for our success, and we feel our efforts reflect on that.

BB: After your “Our Tour Can Beat Up Your Tour,” what are your plans?
RK: Write, record, eat, and video games. The order is arbitrary.

BB: What advice do you have for young musicians trying to make it in the industry?
RK: Write stuff YOU like and don’t copy what’s out there. It’s cool to be influenced, but try to copy someone else who’s already done it will put you at a disadvantage right off the bat.
