Welcome to “ONE TRACK MINDS” with Erika Rae Owen from Band Bombshell and Chris Knauf, board member of the Des Moines Music Coalition.  Each week, Erika and Chris take turns selecting a song of their choice, listen to it together for the first time, and document their reactions, thoughts and witty banter via instant messenger.

This week, Chris and Erika listen to “B.L.O.G.” by Electronidoll.

Listen along while you read their commentary:

Chris: BLOG. Very fitting Ms. Bombshell.

Erika: I thought I was being sneaky with that one… Haha.

Chris: Would you like to do the honors?

Erika: Yes!

1…

Play!

Erika: I feel like this would be a good song to listen to on my commute.

Chris: Is the commute dirty and shady?

Erika: Most days.

Chris: Like going from downtown to West Des Moines?

Erika: Lots of greasers with leather jackets. Sounds about similar!

Chris: So how’d you get turned on to Electronidoll?

Erika: Mostly from other stuff by Jordan Mayland. I think it’s really cool how he can take on a lot of different genres. Mostly rock, but in a slightly different way each time.

Woah, switch up.

Chris: I’m at the slow part…where he turns into Badly Drawn Boy.

Erika: The Renaissance version of that.

Chris: Is that a harp?

Erika: I hope so.

Chris: And that flute thing from Legend of Zelda?

Erika: There’s a lot going on here. How do you feel about it?

Chris: I need another listen.

Erika: Me, too.

Chris: Experimental, to say the least.

Erika: Haha. I don’t know, but I hope they use that for their next album name. I know they didn’t use a computer to make any of those noises.

Chris: Serious Bombshell inside scooping going on.

Playing again.

Erika: Me, too.

Woah, it’s fun to hear the last notes and then go to the beginning again.

Chris: I don’t know why but the intro has a Snoop Dogg vibe for me. Sans rap and weed, of course. I’m getting old. Everything is sounding alike. Except for Phil. As in Collins.

Erika: I was thinking Marilyn Manson. What is wrong with us? Yuck. I can’t stand Phil Collins.

Chris: No appreciation for the classics

Erika: Renaissance Jordan Mayland!

Chris: I have to say…I don’t like the 180 in the song.

Erika: I’m not the biggest fan of this switch-up, but I like this next one.

Chris: It very much sounds like two separate songs…at times, three.

Erika: Some of my favorite songs do that, so I’m ok with the change-up.

It’s irking you, isn’t it?

Chris: It’s that obvious?

Erika: I can feel it in SoHo.

I’m a huge fan of Muse and they do a lot of switch-up stuff like this, so my tolerance is up.

Chris: I don’t mind an occasional change up. Franz Ferndinand “Take Me Out” is a classic example.

This one just seems a bit more disoriented.

Erika: I can see that. I’d like to see it live. Like on Wednesday!

(Not so sneaky show promotion.)

Chris: By the time this is done…I’ll have expressed my love for both Phil and Ferdinand. Whatever shred of cred I had is gone

Well done on the show drop.

Erika: I still respect you.

Chris: So scale of 1-5 Sussudios (do I dare) your thoughts?

Erika: I’ll give it a 3.5. The first time around it was a 2, but I liked it better when I knew what to expect. You?

Chris: 2.5. I respect it taking the listener to unexpected places but I didn’t always like where it went. Kind of like your parents telling you you’re going on vacation to Disneyworld and then you end at a Hard Rock Cafe in Cleveland.

Which at this age, is actually preferable.

Erika: Ha! Have you done that as a real-life parent?

Chris: I can barely stand a road trip with a small child for 30 minutes… Thank God Omaha has a great zoo.

Plus…its an insulting endeavor. “Why isn’t your car as big as Mom’s? Why isn’t your car as clean as Mom’s?”

A single man can only take so much abuse.

Erika: I understand. Just put in the Phil Collins and zone out.

Back to OTM. Des Moines music fans: Wednesday at the Mews. Show’s at 9:30–go and see B.L.O.G. played live and tell us what it’s like. Electronidoll is opening for Yip Deceiver with Doctor Dentist and Ramona Muse.

Bringing it full circle.

Chris: Good lineup. I feel like I’ve hardly seen a show since going back to firm life

Way to keep it on track.

Erika: Well, you need to get out and see one!

Chris: Perhaps Wednesday is the day…
