Youth Music Education

Through partnerships and collaborative efforts within our community, DMMC has made youth music education an important aspect of our mission.  We are appreciative of the opportunity to do such work within the Des Moines Public School district by hosting free after-school classes and in-class guest presentations in multiple schools throughout the district. DMMC has hosted over three-hundred students through our educational initiatives in the last year to date. Learn more by checking out the information below or visit our Education Page for more current updates! Please email DMMC Program/Outreach Manager, Jordan Mayland jordan@desmoinesmc.com, with inquiries about DMMC Music Education programs.

    • Music Summer Camps

During these free two-week camps, students create music in a fun, collaborative environment with no prior experience required. Working as a team under the guidance of seasoned, local musicians and educators, students learn skills needed to play in a band, write lyrics, record music, and perform live on the Emerging Artists Stage at our annual 80/35 music festival.

2023 Summer Camps are set for June 19-29
, and will return back to Ding Darling Shelter, thanks to our partners, Des Moines Parks and Recreation, who have been with us since the beginning of our music education initiatives!  Camp sign-up will be announced in 2023, so please follow DMMC on FacebookInstagram, or Twitter to be the first to know!

    • Hip Hop 101

Led by Hip Hop musician, Dom Russell (Chill Mac), engineer/producer, Anthony Maldonado (AMmixes), & other special guests, students get an opportunity to hone their craft and dive into songwriting, producing, technology, and more.

Hip Hop 101 returned to in-person after-school classes this Spring within the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa at Meredith Middle School, Amos Hiatt Middle School, East High School, McCombs Middle School, Moore Elementary, Gregory & Suzie Glazer Burt Club at Drake University, and Oak Park Elementary after-school classes.
