Heartland Youth Choir provides a performance-based program for singers in grades K - 12 throughout central Iowa, emphasizing musical literacy, character development, and community engagement. Six different ensembles (based on age and voice maturity) deliver 40 performances a year. Founded in 2003, the organization impacts more than 3,000 young people throughout Iowa each year with concerts, school visits, clinics, special events, choir tours, summer camps, and our annual Meet the Composer Festival. The core of our organization is a membership of 170 to 200 students who live within 70 miles of Des Moines. In addition to growing their musical talents, these young people gain leadership and teamwork skills through collaborations with arts organizations and professional musicians. HYC’s focus is on helping singers reach their potential through performance learning and professional collaborations. All conductors and accompanists are current or former music instructors who have years of experience in bringing out the best in young singers. HYC is dedicated to reaching students in underserved communities and, through scholarship assistance, to fulfilling on a promise that no student be turned away because of financial need. This season, we awarded 32 scholarships to singers to cover tuition or tour costs. One of our outreach efforts this season was an after-school choir for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa. Among the notable accomplishments of Heartland Youth Choir: * First Iowa choir invited to the International Choral Festival * Performances this season at World Food Prize and at Gov. Kim Reynolds' inauguration celebration * Gold rating in the World Choir Games * Collaborations with professionals like the Canadian Brass, Simon Estes, Tonic Sol-Fa, and the Des Moines Symphony * Frequent participation in Des Moines Metro Opera productions, including La Boheme and Wozzeck in summer 2019 * 12 years of Meet the Composer Festival
