The first time I saw The Uniphonics was at a show at the Yacht Club in Iowa City. This is a tiny underground venue (literally underground) with odd smells and really just sort of a strange set up, but I think the sticky floors help create some funky dance moves like you won’t see anywhere else. Some real magic can happen in this joint, and it definitely did that night when The Uniphonics took the stage.

The band builds up songs around groovy hooks and legit bass and drum love with layers of saxophone and guitar, like a couple of fresh lovebirds taking to the dance floor like no one’s watching. But when The Uniphonics’ leader takes the stage to lay down ridiculously great raps with flow like the Mighty Mississippi that drift from bank to bank from personal digging to social commentary, you have to watch. And then you’re jumping with each chorus, which with this group comes like a line in the water with a fat fresh grub on the end and you’re the fish who hasn’t eaten in days. You’re gonna bite.

I’ve since seen the group a number of times, including this last summer at 80/35 music festival, and I’ve bitten every time.

Be sure to catch The Uniphonics at the Wooly’s at 7:30pm at this year’s Little Big Fest.
