First impressions can tend to stick inside a person’s brain. It was only a handful of weeks before this past summer’s 80/35 Music Festival when I went to the Downtown Farmers Market to see a showcase of some local bands that would play at the festival. Gloom Balloon had just finished doing exactly what Gloom Balloon does when a very barefoot Steven Pellow came up to the mic, said hello, and rolled out a rug onto the middle of 4th Street.

That morning, accompanied by a bass guitar and a tenor sax, the trio played a small, but stellar set of Funk and Blues tunes while a long winding line of breakfast eaters listened in. I would later see the full lineup of SP3 at 80/35. They brought the rug.

SP3 brings everything you would expect from a funky blues band. A driving bass line, a piercing percussion that you can move to, their fair share of saxophone solos, and some very soulful vocals. All this comes from a group of amazing and talented musicians which all puts this as a band that is a must see on stage. What sticks with me the most about SP3 is how much fun they are having on stage and this is strongly reflected in the music they play. Plus they aren’t even a year old. Impressive for how tight their sound is.

The band has several recordings online, I would suggest starting with “Too High” or “Steal Your Time”, which you can find on the band’s Facebook or Reverbnation pages.

SP3 plays at Little Big Fest on November 15th at Beechwood Lounge at 10:45pm.
