Where does Jessica Villegas — aka Jess V — find the time? Does she have a time-turner necklace, à la Hermione in “Harry Potter,” so she can work on all her musical endeavors? We may never know. Here’s what we do know: Villegas also plays in two other Des Moines bands (bass in Foxholes and guitar in Honeycreeper), but began playing solo last year with her project Jess V.

In her latest musical incarnation Villegas gets back to her roots on the cello and the result is stunning. See “False Hope” as evidence. Villegas defines her sound as “loopgaze with guitar, cello and all the pedals” ultimately creating dark, melodic lullabies that invoke a calming effect as they wash over you. While not far off from the shoegaze genre of her other two bands, in Jess V, Villegas forges her own path — and it’s worth wandering down.
