Des Moines group Mighty Shady certainly has chops. Their guitars soar. Their rhythms groove hard. Their members interpretive dance… sometimes. Boasting influences of Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer and 311, the five piece local group definitely offers a unique rock sound that relies heavily on groove and indie appeal.

Their live covers, like MGMT’s ‘Kids’ and Heatbox’s ‘Bitches from the Milky Way,’ are imaginative and exhibit the infectious energy of a well-practiced, confident rock ensemble. The band describes their sound as “seamlessly shifting from soaring guitars and thundering rhythm to trippy underwater interludes and packing the dance floor with funky undercurrents.” Which is right on. The listener doesn’t have to stretch to feel the funk, to hear the indie, to ride the groove.

If you like to jam or have fun, you do not want to miss Mighty Shady’s live set. The grungy, sparse vocals often take a back seat to the guitar-driven groove, letting the band and listener let loose and become engrossed in the jam. Let Mighty Shady move you. Be the jam.

Be sure to catch Mighty Shady at Beechwood Lounge at 11:45pm at this year’s Little Big Fest.
